MadamCarenThe school life of a trainee is an important and full of life experience. It provides the trainee with an opportunity to develop not only academically, but also socially. CIT has a responsibility as part of the holistic education of its graduates to prepare trainees for eventual entry into the work force or and entrepreneurship.

In addition, it is also the responsibility of CIT to educate the student about the nature of the work force and the trainee’s potential place in it, and how the course of study pursued may eventually affect his/her place in the work force.
The Office of Career services provides immediate assistance one may need to maximize his or her capacity to begin a career.

There is need for strategies towards seamless transition from learning to earning. The Office of Career Services (OCS) has a critical role to play in this regard.
Beyond the academic qualification, one therefore must be well prepared for the workforce by ensuring they are updated on their current career, have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, be self-confident, act as a team player, have excellent communication skills, possess time management abilities, have better problem-solving skills, and generally show commitment towards the success of the organization he/she is expecting to work for (Mishra, 2014).

Strategies set by the Office of Career Services to achieve this include: counseling services, student/industry linkages, apprenticeships, career fairs, recruitments, venture capitals and graduate-tracker services.
We look to empower trainees to make right career choices.

The history of Coast Institute of Technology dates back to 1981 when a group of ten visionary leaders from Taita raised funds to purchase a 42 Acre piece of prime land from African Tourism Development Company Limited for the purpose of starting an institute of technology. It is established in a dynamic education zone in Voi in the coastal mainland, a historic area where the oldest missionary church in Kenya was first built. It is also known to have the first airstrip built in early 1900 in Maktau and used during the second world war in the fight between German and British troops. Situated in the Semi-arid region (ASAL area), the institution has transformed through intensive beautification programme and is attractively nestled in a greeny tree compound in the neighbourhood of Tsavo East National Park.

The college has two campuses: Main Campus (which offers regular programmes and holiday classes) and Town Campus (which offers part-time programmes either as evening classes or Saturday classes). The campus offers both residential and off campus training. The college offers market driven Diplomas, Craft Certificates, Artisan Certificates and Short courses in both Business and Technical programs.

The Institute has more than 100 competent lecturers to deliver quality and effective teaching. The Institute runs income generating activities to supplement its main source. We engage in Corporate Social Responsibility programs and so far we have undertaken a number of courses that benefit the community. Finally, our Women in Technical Education (WITED) has made us proud in championing for girl rights and access to education. WITED champions organize celebration for the International Day for the girl that attracts participants from all levels of education in the County.

Coast Institute of Technology is situated at Tsavo area 2km away from Voi Town, Sophia area after Tavevo Water Company offices, Voi in Taita Taveta County. The Coast Institute of Technology was established in 1981 by the government to provide business and technical skills for school leavers. The Institute is situated in Taita Taveta County, Voi town, just about 150km north of Mombasa and 350 km from the city of Nairobi. CIT is built on a 42 acres land and is registered by the TVETA as per the TVET Act 2013. CIT implements TVET-CDACC, KNEC, KASNEB, NITA, and ICDL curricular all as developed and examined by TVET-CDACC, KNEC, KASNEB, NITA, ICDL, respectively.

Trainers in CIT are the Public Service Commission through the Ministry of Education State Department of Vocational and Technical Training and licensed by TVETA as required by the TVET Act 2013. The Institute has over 140 (both permanent and part-time) competent trainers who deliver quality and effective training. These trainers are continuously undergoing capacity internally, through KATTI training workshops and other professional forums. Others are sponsored to further their education by GOK-AfDB program for relevant skill upgrading and also through KTTC for pedagogical trainings.

The managements skills are provided through KSG and KEMI. The expansion and reforms witnessed in technical and vocational training has been necessitated by Kenya’s objective of industrialization as contained in the Vision 2030 and the MDGs. For these to be realized, it is imperative to develop and effectively utilize the country’s human, physical and financial resources. The Kenya Vision 2030 blue print recognizes human resource development as key to rapid development. Highly trained and flexible human resource that has the relevant knowledge and skills requires sustained and continuous Training and training of content developed and implemented in close consultation with industry.

The Institute has established and manage income generating projects to supplement its main source. We engage in Corporate Social Responsibility programs and offer a number of courses that benefit the community. The institute has also established a food factory that produce food products to the local community while at the same time offer the much-needed hands on experience to some of the hospitality trainees (Baking and confectionery).

A driving school is ready to have its first intake at class C and class B by March 2022 as licensing procedures are complete and training already on site. Coast Institute of Technology has established Women in Technical Education (WITED) in championing the rights of the girl child and enhancing equal access to training opportunities. WITED champions organize celebration for the International Day for the girl child that attracts participants from all levels of education in the County and also carry out marketing of courses to improve girl child enrolment in male dominated courses.

CIT has three campuses; town campus situated in the central business district of Voi Town, Kasghau Campus at Kiteghe-Kasgau and the main campus at Sophia, Voi. The main campus is situated in the rich tourism region of Tsavo National Park with proximity to the various hotels, iron ore and gemstone mining zones and Camps. These make CIT an ideal campus for the type of training that it offers. The Main campus offers both residential and off Campus training.

The institute has well equipped library, E-library, training restaurants, a tourist class hotel which is intended to serve both as a training facility and as an incubation facility serving other clients in search of quality and affordable hospitality services. CIT has also embarked on renovations and improvement of the general infrastructural facilities to make a conducive and attractive training environment for healthy trainees and staff.

CIT has fairly equipped workshops for all the areas of training and planning to expand them to cater for the growing population of trainees. CIT is the largest, oldest and best equipped Technical and Vocational College in Taita Taveta County and has mentored seven other TVCs in the county and beyond. The college is actively involved in research and doing incubation of entrepreneurs from trainee through the Colleges and Institutes Canada-SITVES project, also identified as centre for driving by NTSA, an application already under consideration. Coast Institute of Technology is thus adequately suited for upgrading to a national polytechnic.
